Super Mario Party Jamboree Nintendo Switch 2 Edition plus Jamboree TV is the latest update to the smash hit Super Mario Party for the Nintendo Switch but now enhanced with new mini games featured for Switch 2. But while the base game being a success, was this update necessary to do for the Switch 2? or should it have just been a basic port but with a lower price tag? Only way one to find out, so lets party!

GAMEPLAY:
It looks like Super Mario Party Jamboree is back, but this time bringing with it some brand new mini games, new modes and brand new features that take advantage of the Mouse Mode tech implemented with the Nintendo Switch 2. I reviewed the base game last year and gave it a glowing review for what I felt was a step in the right direction on all fronts for the title, at least compared to previous entries in recent years, due to how polished it was, alongside the plethora of new features, modes, mini games, quality of life fixes and new game boards. Since I have already reviewed it, I won't spend too much time on the main games content, so if you want my FULL thoughts, you'll have to check out my base game review. But for those that don't have the time to do so, I will elaborate a little bit on what the main game offers you before getting into the extra content present in Jamboree TV. Speaking of this title, is the name LONG enough? like good golly, who does Nintendo think they are? Capcom? I kid I kid, but it is a pretty long name though. Starting off the main hub area you have in the game, which you can dress up like Animal Crossing, this little hub area lets you check out all ranking systems, buy new reactions to use with friends and NPC's during mini games, unlock new stickers for your player card so you can look fancy, help jerk face Kamek with their problems as you head over to a board game to unlock mini stars which give a reward based off an objective completed. Still feels weird helping him though, after all, he did try to take us out when were just itty bitty Baby Mario so we shouldn't really be...... we shouldnt be...... we shouldnt.... oh for yoshi sakes, shut up Baby Mario!. You know what? I changed my mind I totally get your motive now Kamek, I apologize. Using this same hub world, you're allowed to take a hot air balloon that lets you check out the main game modes for this version, which are the main board areas, an island specifically just for mini games, toad factory, rhythm kitchen, battle against a kaiju Bowser with friends, Koopathon mode and Paratrooper training. Mario Party mode is what you'd expect, 4 players across seven different boards and choose the amount of turns you want to play with such as 10 turns, 20 turns, etc. Each board, most which are new including, King Bowsers Keep with all of its hazards, Goomba Lagoon with routes that change based off the water raising every few turns that forces you to alter course like me trying to avoid crashing in video games, Mega Wigglers board that has you move across his home and can even enrage him to the point where he completely crashes out like the angry german kid from over a decade ago.. you get it, its Mario Party, but its Mario Party at its best with varied mini games ranging from motion based to normal styled mini games with a mix of old and new alike, definitely a ton of fun.
Outside that mode, you have all the extra stuff such as a mini game island which is you know, all about them mini games. Its pretty self explanatory. Koopalathon lets you compete against a dozen players worldwide as you face off in mini games and collect items to partake in a foot race, ala Koopa The Quick style, only without cheating to beat that poor sucker... hehe, loser. The races are done in real time, which definitely ups the intensity factor to it and makes it a lot of fun and great new addition. Bowser Kaboom Squad is another new fun addition to the series that has you team up with friends or computers and work together to break crates, dodge hazards like Charging Chucks and obtain bombs in order blow Godzilla Bowser sky high before your time limit of 5 rounds is up. Plus it has fart running, so 10 out of 10 just for that alone. With power ups like hammers for breaking boxes, speed ramps, collecting 100 coins to get stronger golden bombs, there's pretty much no end to the chaotic fun you can have- I loved this mode. The remaining modes for the base game include Rhythm Kitchen that allows you to join a game show to cook your favorite meals by slicing carrots, potatoes, making soup.. and baking a cake. Good thing I can bake better in real life than in game because man did I let my team down something fierce. There's also resident real estate mogul Toad and his factory which is the collection of the very basic versions of Joy-Con based motion gaming that has you lift and lower platforms to move a ball from one area to another. While as I stated in my review that it's not bad, its just not very fun for me.. If I wanted to juggle stuff around, Id play the NES Noah's Ark game where you have to pick up like 5 animals at a time. Seriously where did he get all that strength from? bro puts The Hulk to shame. Lastly we have Paratroopa Flight School that gives me both the horrible nightmares of playing Pilotwings and joy of flying in Mario 64. Using the motion controls you have to hold out your arms and extend them into a flying motion, just like using the Cap in Mario 64 to fly and then flap your arms in order to climb into the sky, adjust your altitude and even partake in a delivery service to move the island inhabitants from area to area with Fly'N'High Airlines, with me of course as your captain. Wait wait.. I'm flying? oh no no no, AhHhHhHh!

But now we get to the actual main event of this package, which is of course the new additions of everything involved in Jamboree TV. The game starts you off like its a game show like The Price is Right and the audience cheers as you are picked to be a contestant. If you have a camera for the Switch 2, when picking your playable in game character, mine being my girl Pauline, then you're able to insert your own face and reaction into the game - however I do not have one, so it just leaves it as a void and emptiness of a face as an icon, just like the ''Mmm-Hmm'' meme. The whole time watching this opening sequence I just wanted to hear The Price Is Right theme play as I over energetically run down the aisle way like a freak, high fiving everyone and Bob Barker screaming ''COME ON DOWNNNN!''. Knowing myself and how clumsy I am, I would be the one person to fall down the stairs and roll onto the stage, no doubt. Unlike the base game, Jamboree T.V. on Switch 2 gets an uptick in graphic fidelity that makes the environments and characters look smoother and pop out more as you get ready to take on all the new mini games features that showcase just what Switch 2 is capable of using the a console camera as stated previously, built in microphone and even further use of the Mouse Mode - which for me has been a highlight of my Switch 2 experience so far with games I played like mini games I'll talk about soon in this and even the newly released Mario Paint on Nintendo Switch Online that I dove into quite a bit recently, painting nothing but creative masterpieces that belong in a museum of arts, making banger songs, swatting flies and so on. You get the picture, Mouse Mode has been great on Switch 2 so far, but were not here to talk about the silliness of Mario Paint, we need to get into the details of why or why not Jamboree T.V. should be on your radar. If you're playing with friends and families who also are picked up by the camera if you have one, then right off the bat before any gameplay is even had, there will be funny moments due to being able to see their faces and reactions pop up on screen alongside their created characters, which since this is Mario Party, there will only be one or two distinct reactions, joy... and complete and utter rage. Trust me on this one, I'm a Mario Party veteran since the first game launched, I have seen many horrors of my life time, most of which would keep you up at night, but for me, its my lullaby. We are not the same. But I'm not here to trauma dump, I'll save that for my next appointment to Dr. Mario so he can give me pills so I can have some sanity in my life. Thank you Mario!. I would bake you a cake, but I'm too lazy so I'll just give you thumbs up. Anyways, my mind is all over place, lets continue.
Briefly stated previously, Jamboree TV offers a bump on not only resolution, but better performance in both handheld and docked modes, new lighting effects and uptick in clarity. Why is this important? simple, it offers the user a better experience when using the camera to detect the frames of each players face and makes each mini game you encounter a much better experience than before, alongside a much smoother online experience. The modes this go around that you are able to choose from are Mario Party mode with brand new twists, free play mode that allows you to play any mini game you want in any order you wish to, Carnival Coaster that lets you use Mouse Mode to take on the new on-rail shooter game, and Bowser Live mode that lets you attend a concert by Bower himself and Bowser Jr as you compete to be a fan favorite using both your built in microphone and your camera to compete in several rhythm and sound based mini games. Lets start off with the new features of Mario Party mode. New additions to Mario Party mode include Frenzy Rules and Tag Team matches. In Frenzy rules mode, you are down to your last 5 turns and all spaces not only give you double coins of six per blue space, but that also means it will take six coins per red space as well... which is rage inducing.. more on that later... cause man I'm not happy with Mario. The main difference though however from normal Party Rules is that since this is only a 5 turn game, all players get started with handicaps such as 50 coins, 1 star and even Double Dice to use at your discretion and then its up to you just how you're going to screw over enough players to be able to take the lead by the time the 5 turns are over. Oh my baby Mario, this mode is so dang stressful, so much can go wrong just from one mistake, which can cost you the game or even stuff that isnt even your fault like freaking long neck freak Waluigi constantly landing on a Bowser space and having Bowser steal coins from EVERYONE. What the heck bro, you're the one that screwed up, not us, dang jerk. However, its the smaller things that are even more rage worthy like being within like 5 or 6 spaces to climb the tower to buy my Star to give myself the lead and then someone lands on a Switch space and changes it to Bowser at the last minute, resulting in me getting a FAKE STAR, losing coins and fumbling my chance at taking the lead, resulting in the person behind me getting it instead. With 5 turns, you WONT have another chance to get one, so you're screwed...well almost. Luckily I am a mini game queen and was able to rack up enough coins and purchase items at the shops because in the result rankings, both me and Mole boy got extra stars, meaning we tied for first place, however, I edged him out by just EIGHT coins and won by a slim margin. Yeesh! I know this is called Super Mario Party Jamboree TV Edition but it really shouldve been called Super Mario Party: Heart Attack edition because man was I stressed the whole time. Almost dying aside though, Frenzy rules is actually really fun and I can definitely see it being a crowd favorite with family and friends.

But then... we got, Tag Team mode. Oh goddess Rosalina, I had to carry this mode something fierce. Self explanatory really, but in Tag Team match, you team with one other person, whether it be an NPC or friend or family and then take on another team in a 2 versus 2 battle of the ages. In my case I picked Mario as my partner, cause how could you go wrong with Mario? oh... you can go very wrong... very very wrong, and our opponents were Bowser and Bowser Jr. With these rules of 2 versus 2, you share all your coins and all your stars with your partner in crime, which is both a great thing and a bad thing, especially with partnering with Mario. I was doing all I could do, buying items to move Stars around so the other team couldn't get them, stopping them and boo ghost from stealing our coins, buying warp pipes to send us directly to a star, you name it, but Mario? nah let me just roll a 1 or a 3 and constantly land on red spaces to lose us coins, lose us mini games, not using a correct item resulting in us losing a star, spending our money at the shop for items we dont need so we dont have enough to buy a star on our next few turns... like COME ON! MARIO GET WITH THE PROGRAM, I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE. Luckily my strategic game planning came in handy by using items to move the star away from Bowser or Bowser Jr at the last second to be a jerk, otherwise we definitely wouldve lost because of Mario. Go back to plumbing, partying aint it bro. Moving over to other modes we have mini game free for all which showcases the Mouse Mode with really fun versions of Air Hockey, Mazes, Bomb throwing, Ice sledding that has you pull back on the mouse and thrust forward to shoot yourself forward to pop balloons.. which I suck at, getting your Jet Set on and spray painting bombs, use Joy Cons to lift your arms to climb up a wall alternating arms left and right to climb, ice cream scooping, a Knock Knock Match mini game that has you and your partner match characters behind a door... wait a minute, who does this game think it is, Hotel Mario? Yes that's EXACTLY what it reminds me of but instead of shutting all the doors to complete your objective, you must match all characters, similar to the card game from Super Mario Bros 3. Man, now I want Nintendo to somehow get the rights and re-release Hotel Mario for Switch 2, then we'll truly come full circle. Capping off all the modes though however is Bowser Live and my favorite mode of this collection, Carnival Coaster. We'll start off with Bowser Live and then end with Carnival Coaster to send things home.
In Bowser Live, you attend his live concert with hundreds of other attendees and depending which mode you select, be it camera mode or microphone mode, you will be put into a team to take on three separate challenges. In my case I chose microphone based due to not having the camera for the system. The goal of the microphone mini game is to see who can get the highest crowd reaction by using your Microphone to yell as loud as you can like you're Aerosmith or something, clapping your hands to the beat of a rhythm game ala Guitar Hero, use vocals to move Bowser Jr's clown car up and down to collect coins, etc. Its very brief and not as fun solo as this mode would be for a good ol family night, which then I'd say this mode would be the highlight of the night due to the silly antics that can take place or end up with the police showing up to your house because you're causing a neighborhood disturbance with all the screaming you're doing.. whichever comes first. Lastly we have Carnival Coaster which is a light gun on rail shooter with 5 playable courses, one of which involves you being chased by Bowser and taking on mini games as you escape his wrath, but the real highlights are the other 4 stages, all based on different sections of the Mushroom Kingdom and all being roller coaster themed as you zoom, spin and loop around overlooking gorgeous environments. The goal however is not just to ride at your own leisure, I wish, instead you're tasked with using the Mouse Mode controls to move a cursor around the screen and zap and shoot any enemies that fly onto the screen or in carts next to you before they damage you, and when doing so, you will get a few more seconds of time on your clock to get a better high score or extra time to make it to a check point, which in this game, are of course, mini games that you compete in to boost your score. The levels include Volcano Coaster that has you riding through a huge volcano outside and inside, giving me major vibes of the Disneyland ride, Big Thunder Mountain or even Splash Mountain when you put your hands up and yell like you're Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins. Then you have Sky High Coaster which takes you above the clouds of the Mushroom Kingdom as you ride by high arching mushrooms, which looks fantastic, Carnival Coaster being your more basic coaster with lots of big drops and amazingly detailed scenery, and finally Haunted Coaster that takes you through a spooky adventure at Boo's Mansion where you fight off ghosts that get in your way. It really made me want another Luigi's Mansion to be honest, I love the design and feel of it, and.. what? talking flower guy just say what I think he said? hold up, rewind, It cant be. What the heck bro, something is wrong with it, why do you want to know what a GHOST tastes like? you have issues. I'm never going coastering with you again, what a little freak. They taste like chicken though, just saying.

OVERALL:
At the end of the day, the addition of Jamboree TV to the base game of Super Mario Party Jamboree ended up a ton of fun. Sure there can be perceived negatives such as splitting the modes up between two selections on the title screen, price point, not updating the graphical fidelity of base game and so forth, however for me, the positives and the fun factor win out with 20 new mini games, mini games that effectively highlight the strengths this generation for Joy Cons and Mouse Mode far better than the original Switch did, diverse gameplay modes for everyone that wants Mario Party vanilla rules with extra additions for more intensity, Carnival Coaster that gives you the thrill of a roller coaster in your living room with great on rails shooting mechanics that makes me wish Nintendo would do something similar for a Yoshi's Safari revival. I mean we get a re-release of Mario Paint, let me have hope for Yoshi's Safari okay?. At the end of the day, while I can see the issue with having to pay full price, I still think for the chunk of content, its worth it, especially when you can get dozens and dozens of hours of gameplay in the base game and now with a whole new plethora of events to extend that even further and honestly, if you already own the main game, its only a $20 investment to purchase Jamboree TV on Switch 2 if you already own the base game, so that's a win. One last time I want to reiterate, I understand the concerns, trust me, but looking at the CONTENT offered and not based off my ''feelings'', I honestly think the game has more than enough to sink your teeth into to warrant a purchase. So with all that having been said, my verdict is clear, GameNChick says BUY NOW.
